For every 100,000 citizens in Spain, there are about 70 people without a home. Many of these people were forced out onto the street by a lack of other available options. Some have faced the loss of a job with the economic downturn in Spain and were left unable to pay their rent or mortgage while others have suffered from personal problems in their family life or even mental health disorders.

Whatever their reason for turning to the street, there are about 3,000 homeless people living in Barcelona, and many of them depend on the kindness of the volunteers at Barcelona’s soup kitchens for a hot meal and a social community. If you’re interested in volunteering in Barcelona, soup kitchens can be a great place to lend a helping hand. Here are some of the soup kitchens in Barcelona where you can help to feed the homeless population of Barcelona.

Arrels Fundació has been committed to helping the homeless of Barcelona since 1987 by providing them with housing, healthcare, and meals. They also provide a community for the homeless population with a team of over 400 volunteers and 4,000 contributors.

In the soup kitchen at Arrels is open for breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack, and dinner, and workers focus on giving the homeless a nutritious and balanced meal. They even celebrate big days like Christmas together by serving special meals. If you’d like to get involved, you can either sign up as a volunteer or donate money on their website. While Arrels does receive some public money, most of their funding comes from the private donations that allow them to keep their doors open and the homeless every day.

Emmaús Menjador Social

Volunteers at Emmaús soup kitchen began their work in 2011 in the Eixample district of Barcelona with the goal of establishing a social space where the elderly and families in need could get a hot, nutritious meal. Today, they have about 100 volunteers who take care of all the dining needs from food preparation to accompanying the diners, offering medical advice, and leading workshops or cultural outings. They focus on providing both food and social support for those who live in poverty. They also open their doors to families with children and minors so every hungry mouth can get a good meal when they need one.
